Maintaining Bunkers

Maintaining Bunkers

After the recent feedback survey carried out by the Club to members, it was apparent the main issue that seemed to be raised are the bunkers. Below is a video explaining why the bunkers are so difficult to maintain. The majority of our bunkers were designed poorly with water entering the bunkers from off the sides of greens and causing a lot of wash. The other issue we have at present is plugged balls; this seems to be made worse during winter months with very low rainfall and no irrigation to compact the bunker sand like we have in summer months when we are watering greens and surround nightly. Another reason why the bunkers are so difficult to maintain is players not entering the bunkers correctly, leaving large footprints in the faces of the bunkers. Players should enter the bunkers at the lowest point to avoid the dislodgement of sand and softening the faces and increasing the risk of plugged balls. We hope this explains help members understand our bunker problems. Regards, Justin Sheehan, Course Superintendent
